The first Nintendo Direct of 2014 revealed some new details for upcoming Wii U and 3DS games due for release this year - most notably Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. If there are any games which are going to help bolster the Wii U’s sales, we imagine it will be these three.

Mario Kart 8 is due for release on 30th May 2014, and the Nintendo Direct video served as an announcement for some new playable characters too – Bowser’s minions, the Koopalings, will be available for you to power-slide and shell-launch, as you race around the tracks.

A new character was also announced for Super Smash Bros. too – Little Mac, of Punch Out!! fame, has been added to the ever-growing roster of characters. There is no definitive release date for Smash Bros. yet, but it is due out this year. We’ll keep you updated, of course.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is looking great, with plenty of barrel cannon and banana collecting action! It’s set for release on 21st February 2014, so you haven’t got long to wait at all. *Chest-pound*

The Nintendo Direct video also announced details of other games, including Bayonetta 2, Mario Golf: World Tour, Yoshi’s New Island, and many more. Watch the full video of the Nintendo presentation below to get your fix.
